The European Rookie-Cup 2015-2018

In June 2014 the Erste Bank Eishockey League submitted the project “European Rookie Cup” to the European Union, who then admitted the International tournament-series to the program „Erasmus + Collaborative Partnerships in Sports“.

After the Erste Bank Eishockey League, the Youngstars League and the Juniors League in March 2015 another ambitious project – the European Rookie Cup – will be put into practice.
Seven countries (AUT, HUN, ITA, SLO, GER, CRO, and BiH) will take part in this cross-border tournament series for U16 teams. After the respective national Championships the best 16 teams, a maximum of four teams per country, will be qualified for the four playoff-tournaments in four different countries. Each winner of the four tournaments will then be part of the Final Tournament.

Not only giving the teams the possibility to compete with other international teams of the same age group is the goal of the Cup, but also to enable the coaches and referees as well to exchange and improve themselves in coaches- and/or referee-clinics. The main reason for the funding of the Cup by the European Union is that the Erste Bank Eishockey League, together with its partners, is counteracting the current problems in sports like betting fraud & match fixing, doping and intolerance & discrimination and is educating and sensitizing the young sportsmen.

“I am happy that the hard work, preparing the application documents, paid off and our idea of the project met with a positive response in the European Union. I am sure that the European Rookie Cup can achieve a lot for sport and especially icehockey itself“, stated the head of the project, Mag. Axel Bammer.
